One of the top 5 hardest tree jobs I have ever done!
This is the follow up video of the Chimney Oak situation. It's a bit longer but this is a very good video. If you are a tree service owner, watch it with your crew. Play a game called "spot the mistakes"

28:21 It's a good thing that trunk came down slowly. I didn't see any ropes to guide the weight down. I saw a job once where the trunk that was cut was only 10 feet from the base, At 1/3 the weight of your tree it came down hitting so hard it cracked the underground water lines to the house. Water came up through the ground. One pissed homeowner.

You are concerned the tree could fall at any moment yet your filming from on top of the chimney cap with tree above you. Interesting. I’ve done tons of craning of trees off houses. That lumber won’t stop shit and highly doubtful that tree will just decide to fall more.
arboristBlairGlenn
arboristBlairGlenn Måned siden
Well Nick, much of the weight was still in the ground so those timbers were the best we could do and it worked. I work in situations of extreme hazards all the time and I believe my attention to change is what keeps me here.

Tried had not to move the tree too much while working. The chimney save was key. If it continued to break, the cost would have been greater because this county does not allow chimney repairs due to burn bans

Got a lot of negative comments on this video. It was a tough job to save that chimney. In our area, with burn bans, you are not allowed to rebuild a damaged chimney. The value of the intact chimney to the home value was a lot! That home sold for 3.5 million!!

@arboristBlairGlenn if I am not mistaken there is a road on the other side. Actually I did see how wide it is in there. You could put a 140 ecxcavator in there no problem . I know you are not an operator! But I am .. and i seen different things you did not.. like I said , it looks as though the road way right on the other side of the hedge row , where you had the bucket truck parked and doing work from there. Sorry that tree would of been out of there with a excavator. A excavator would lift that tree right up..
arboristBlairGlenn
arboristBlairGlenn Måned siden
Right--, do you see how tight it is in there? I can’t imagine the neighbor allowing a big machine in their tight driveway. Putting that bucket in there also came with a promise to do no damage. Also, if you had watched the whole video carefully, you might have understood the delicate balance on the chimney. Did not (could not) damage that chimney. Burn bans do not allow repairs to chimneys so that grandfathered in chimney was critical to preserve. That, my friend , is why I took my time!

We had a freak wind come through last week and an 80 foot aspen came down headed for my house. The garage broke its fall. $8k in damage. My Amish neighbor and his boys are loggers too. I don’t climb anymore but he squirreled up to put a line from a solid tree near and we used a track cat to raise the trunk off the roof and pieced it down. That old straw hat said “ that wasn’t bad, just give me $400” I gave him 800 adding $200 each for his boys. He wouldn’t take a dime more. This morning he brought me a fresh turkey. I’m thankful for Mr Yoder as a neighbor and friend.

arboristBlairGlenn
arboristBlairGlenn 2 måneder siden
When I bid the job, I expected a crane to be able to lift large sections. When I got started, and climbed up on that chimney, I felt strongly that any rotation caused by large lifts would have destroyed the chimney. Because of air quality laws, a chimney cannot be rebuilt. So saving this grandfathered chimney became a big part of the process. I directed all lifts by the crane. Them leaving was unforgivable.
Snowman Rainmaker

@arboristBlairGlenn I was thinking in comparison to the damage that was not caused to the house by your good work would have been far greater than what you charged. Plus I think a good crane operator could have made the whole job a lot easier and quicker.

One more funny tidbit to mention. Grandpa said something in Spanish to his grandson, and I don't understand Spanish. However the kid was laughing so hard that I had to ask what was said? They only had a Harbor Freight 16" pole saw, but fell my Oak in (4)hours. Here's the kicker, they ONLY charged me $400.00 and took all of the wood. That's when the rest of the FAMILY showed up. It took them three days to cut into cord wood and haul away. Son of bitch they were GREAT!!!! I'm guessing that this job cost more than $400.00??? How much was it?
