The technology that’s replacing the green screen

The green screen is a Hollywood staple. Should it be?
It’s easy to complain about overreliance on special effects, but for projects that require impossible-to-film environments or have incredibly expensive shots, how do you get the flexibility of green screens without the drawbacks?
Charmaine Chan has worked on one of the possible answers. Vox's Phil Edwards spoke to her about her career and how it's at the forefront of a big technological shift. As a compositor for venerable effects house Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), she’s worked on films like The Last Jedi, assembling various digital elements into a beautiful, seamless image. Her job changed on The Mandalorian, one of the first shows to use ILM’s upgrade for the green screen: LED panels that used video game engine technology to place a realistic-looking world behind the actors.
It was a huge improvement, because green screens actually have a lot of drawbacks. Removing the green screen is never as quick as visual effects artists would hope. It also casts green light upon the set and actors. Even substitutes for a green screen, like projecting an image onto a screen behind the actor, fail to dynamically respond to camera movements the way they would in the real world.
ILM’s solution fixes a lot of those problems, and it also led to creative breakthroughs in which the old Hollywood order of a TV show or movie, in which VFX came last, was suddenly reversed. Now, artists like Charmaine are alongside actors, set designers, and other crew members during filming. That collaboration means that this technology doesn’t just eliminate a screen - it eliminates a creative barrier.

The most important news program Tagesschau in Germany has a 17.5 meter long curved projection surface. 7 projectors create a seamless image. Explanatory backgrounds are displayed depending on the news. Other programs use the same studio with different backgrounds. For example a news program aimed at children and several political programs. The studio produces 24/7 programs, most of them live. LED screens are not used because you need a high, sharp resolution. But projector surfaces with 7 synchronous projectors were also unusual.

due to my deal memo on the production i am on i cannot reveal the tv show, but we call it the A R wall we have a stage in toronto of the wrap around LED panels ...its amazing when standing back with our set {im a set dresser } it truley gives a depth to your set ....i wish i could show you the pictures i took but alas i cant or i will get fired or worse but it really helps the actors ..they become immearsed totally surrounded by whatever landscape or "set" you give them...personally ive noticed where we dressed almost seemlessly melds into the image on the LED pixo panels .....its really cool to be part of this new technology in film making

doesn’t work, Visual effect is done after the shooting, not before, if you do it before you cannot easily make changes. It may look fancy but useless and expensive.

It's definitely an awesome method, but...a complete waste of money in my opinion. This method only works with million dollar budgets. Most films or series shot now a days are closer to $200,000-$500,000 and that's a decent size budget.

I'm surprised you didn't mention "Interstellar", since Nolan famously filmed most of it with virtual back-drops rather than green screen. Which just goes to show that this new technology benefits the actors as much as the film crew.

So they just went back to the old school rear projection. That is how they did it over 70 years ago. It is nothing new. Just the tech of projection has changed. Watch an old 1950's SciFi flick. They did it this way. Not say it is bad. Just saying we have been here before. However with better OLED screens etc. This might just be the answer.
