The only highlight of a really poor England performance throughout the tournament. We had some great players as well. Always very satisfying beating the Germans, and we have done it a few times believe it or not. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿.

Euro 2000 is something of a forgotten tournament for England but they played an entertaining game against Portugal and beat the Germans. I was only 11 but I remember the Romania game and the disbelief when Phil Neville made a quite ridiculous tackle in the box. They could easily have got to the Semis but France were a class above any side back then

mick harrison In my opinion that was worse than the game against Iceland because at least I was able to name some of Iceland’s players. Only issue being that Iceland were smaller than the city of Nottingham but in all fairness, they played us off the park. It helped them though with Hodgson having the constant passing sideways & passing backwards tactics. I’m no fan of Southgate either though, he’s another “yes” man who bottles it.

@Gunner Boy yeah your rite, and obviously Phil neville one of our worst players ever, fkn legend for his gaff you'd only usually see in a kids playground, that game was so bad us imploding you'd think our players had a bet on Romania.

mick harrison I thought it was more embarrassing of us to lose 3-2 to bloody Romania. No doubt we cocked up against Portugal but at least they had quality players. Apart from Hagi, I don’t remember any of the other Romanian players!

You say that about France but in that final against Italy, Italy should’ve finished it off before Wiltord scored as Del Piero had missed a few opportunities. Euro 2000 was probably my favourite tournament growing up. Not from an England fan’s point of view but from the spectacle, the entertainment & the quality on display.

Daniel Wilkins If I remember correctly, when we played Argentina & we had 10 men didn’t we score a perfectly good goal which got disallowed for some odd reason? I do remember that despite the Beckham sending off, we battled hard & played well with 10 men. Obviously, he was needed to help us to victory but even with 10 men we looked reasonably good. When our fans still moan about the goal against Germany at South Africa 2010, I got over that because Germany battered us & we would’ve lost 4-2. However, with this game at France 1998 we were the better team than Argentina & we would’ve won 3-2. Hoddle did get us playing great attacking football which could’ve caused damage to Holland, Brazil or France, and this is all coming from an Arsenal fan.

@Franque Worren hahaha no, I suppose they don't to you... So sorry, I didn't realise that a striker's role in games changed completely depending on the quality of the matches he's in. 'Best league in history at the time'? Good luck finding another person who actually believes that. I also love how you claim my points don't make sense before launching into a long rant about a Brazilian defender scoring a goal in a match his side lost, yeah really phenomenal 😂. Brazilians are the best defenders are they? That'll be why they never get into teams of the year then. Germany might have 7 things to say about that...for all their silkiness half of them play like they're midfielders, David Luiz being an example, but with a few exceptions most of them use their composure on the ball to mask shortcomings in positional awareness or anticipation. Nesta, Maldini, Cannavaro, Hierro, Ferdinand, Ayala, Samuel, De Boer were all defenders of the time who could play with composure and actually *defend* . To claim that Jancker had a harder time scoring against him and a bunch of mediocre German defenders of the time than the others I mentioned just shows you up as ridiculous. Oh, so all of Jancker's goals were really high quality, sure...I'm sure you can give me several examples of amazing worldies that none of the other strikers I mentioned could manage...do go ahead...for every 1 goal you can find like that you can find 5 for any of them... Ok first of all, the quality of a goal doesn't determine its importance. All goals are worth the same. Secondly, even if they were Jancker would still find himself hopelessly outclassed by the names I've given. Thirdly, saying 'he used to track back a lot' is not a 'for instance' of how high quality his goals were, I mean have...have you ever even had a debate with anyone before? You're really rather awful at it. And how do you know I haven't seen him play live? Mind you, the rest of your arguments are based on wild assumptions. What the hell does Barthez's size have to do with anything? No goalie in the world would have saved it, not even your precious Schmeichel. Ooh, another baseless assumption! I wonder if you can tell me (without looking it up) which goalie played in the F.A Cup Final with a broken neck? Or which World Cup ended without a proper final? The nickname for Hungary's star-studded national side of the 50s? Or what happened to the famous Jules Rimet trophy? Which full back scored for Brazil in the 70 final? Or what was unusual about Garrincha? Or what famous writer used to play in goal for Portsmouth? All of these things took place decades ago, so if a 'current football' fan like me knows then you certainly should. Ronaldinho did 'f-all' huh...tell that to his trophy cabinet. Oh, and he out-scored/out-assisted Jancker too, but that 'doesn't matter', right... Anyway you clearly have some learning difficulty so I'm starting to feel bad for thoroughly dismantling every aspect of your argument so easily, so I'm gonna leave it there. It's honestly like having an argument with a 3 year old; A clear winner of logic, the only issue being the toddler's inability to grasp basic concepts. Feel free to continue though, if you must 🙂

@Kenjamin None of your points make any sense. Sport is an activity which is not constant, it fluctuates in quality. Jancker played in a league that was the best in history at the time. It had Lucio, for example, who scored that goal in the Champions League final and pulled his top up to say "Jesus loves you" which is one of the most iconic moments in history and that proves that german football at the time was truly phenomenal. To have Brazillian centre backs is the gold standard of football because normally defenders just defend. You know that when you get a Brazillian centre back (who is actually good, not all are, some are overrated) they will be skilful and Lucio was and that is who Jancker had to deal with, the likes of him. I am sure you are licking the balls of the likes of Maldini who was so fucking average and overrated he had to stay at the one club for his career. Sure he could defend but he couldn't do much else. Jancker's goals were higher in quality and he did it in style (due to his strength and size - he had the highest intimidation factor in football, a bit like Ibrahimovic today but Jancker was bigger built). You basically pull stats up and say x is better than y but that is not necessarily the case because it depends on the quality of the goals. For instance, Jancker was so unselfish he used to run all the way back to defend in tough games - I have seen it in the flesh in the stadium and you haven't, fact. Henry scored that goal against Barthez who was a midget, for instance, so you are not telling the whole story. Roy Makaay ffs. Come on. You seem like a fan of current football and Premier League and are biased toward the usual so-called overrated stars like Ronaldinho. Ronaldinho did fuck all apart from a fluke against old man Seaman. Ffs get a grip You don't even believe all the shit you are spouting.
Kenjamin
Kenjamin 4 måneder siden
@Franque Worren wow, that's a whole load of butthurt right there. Where to start...'I'm just looking up stats from websites'...funnily enough, the success of a striker tends to be judged on how many goals and assists they contribute over their career, not 'how big their jaw is', but far be it from me to let actual verifiable facts undermine your bias. 'Big and strong'...guess what, so were Jan Koller, David Trezeguet, Luca Toni, Vincenzo Laquinta, Patrick Kluivert, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Roy Makaay...all of whom scored and assisted more goals than him. Want to know another big, strong forward who scored more goals in a top 5 European league? Emile Heskey, who also scored in the Germany - England match I believe 😂. And I'm sure Jancker did score a couple of 'quality goals', along with a higher ratio of tap-ins/close-range headers than you'd care to admit, but the odd worldie here and there does not a world-class footballer make, and the sheer dearth of assists on his record tell you a better story of how good he really was at 'bringing others into play'; winning more aerial 50-50s from Kahn's goal kicks doesn't count for much when you're 40 yards from goal. Pretty sure Marouane Fellaini was good at that too... And no, I wouldn't be licking his bollocks if he had scored instead of hitting the woodwork one time. Speak for yourself. 'Better at bringing others into play *and shooting* than Henry?!?!?' This perhaps best demonstrate how utterly delusional you are. Henry still holds the record of 20 assists in one season, and shooting? Jancker wishes he had even half of Henry's tally, or his ability to smack inch-perfect freekicks/backheels/finesse shots/volleys in. I can't see Jancker scoring from a mazy 40-yard dribble, or that flick-pivot-volley against your beloved United somehow 😂 Who gives 2 hoots if he was taller than Ronaldo, he had about a tenth of his impact on games, Rivaldo was an attacking midfielder but he did play up front for Brazil alongside Ronaldo in the 2002 World Cup (you know, the one where they won the thing) with Ronaldinho behind them, Totti was...are you freaking serious? See, now I genuinely can't tell if you're just having a wind-up or not. Jancker was not fit to lace Totti's boots. As for Del Piero/Bergkamp/Recoba, it doesn't matter where along the front they played, their records still all put Jancker's to shame. And to call Serie A 'slow a.f' is downright disrespectful, you dare demand respect for an average player in the same breath as utterly dismissing one of the world's greatest national leagues, you arrogant prat. Serie A has statistically been the strongest league defensively for decades, which only makes the achievements of all the aforementioned even more impressive. If you were to compare the strength of Serie A to the Bundesliga around that time most would agree the former was the strongest. Munich, Dortmund, Schalke and Stuttgart compared to A.C Milan, Inter, Juventus, Fiorentina, Lazio, Parma, Roma...just look at which league had the most of those world-class strikers at the time. You honestly can rate Jancker as highly as you want, but I'm not wasting anymore time explaining to you why strikers with records that comprehensively eclipse his are the better players. That's just the most rudimentary common sense. If you genuinely can't see that then good luck to you.
